Dr Svitlana Kheda co-authored Ukraine’s first coursebook on mediation for lawyers

Sayenko Kharenko’s counsel Dr Svitlana Kheda co-authored Ukraine’s first coursebook on mediation for law students – “Mediation in the Lawyer’s Professional Activities”. In particular, Dr Kheda wrote the chapter “Employment Mediation”.

This coursebook is a result of implementing a project by the Ukrainian Mediation Academy under the auspices of the USAID New Justice Program. It contains complex educational materials for teaching mediation to law students, as well as helpful infographics illustrating the place of mediation among other alternative dispute resolution methods. The coursebook, in particular, demonstrates mediation advantages, analyses the mediation principles and the essence of the mediation process, explains the mediator’s role and informs about the skills and competences required for becoming a good mediator, as well as explores on the specifics of different types of mediation (e.g., employment, family, business, international mediation, etc.) and discusses mediation in different spheres of the legal practice.

Dr Svitlana Kheda comments: “I find it incomprehensible that before this coursebook Ukraine did not have any integrated study guide for teaching mediation to future legal professionals – those who can be either the biggest champions of mediation or the major blockers of this strikingly effective dispute settlement method. This publication is a real breakthrough destined to change the mindset of future lawyers and, therefore, foster mediation development in Ukraine. I am honoured and privileged to have contributed to such an important cause and closely working with a team of the country’s leading legal scholars, who also are crème de la crème mediators.”
