On 18 June 2015, Oleg Klymchuk, senior associate with Sayenko Kharenko, spoke at the Intellectual Property Forum, held in Kyiv.
During his speech, Oleg discussed prospects for protection of geographical indications of the EU in Ukraine under the UE-Ukraine Association Agreement (“Agreement”). In particular, Oleg considered how the EU-protected geographical indications could be protected today in Ukraine when the Agreement is not in force yet. Oleg also dwelled on the issue regarding recent bad faith trademarks registrations of famous wine brands that are protected in the EU as geographical indications.
Within his speech Oleg also outlined benefits for the Ukrainian geographical indications to be protected under the Agreement and suggested a to-do list for Ukraine to ensure protection of the Ukrainian geographical under the Agreement.
The participants discussed various issues including the role of the state in administration of intellectual property; legislative initiatives in intellectual property for the improvement of investment climate in Ukraine; vector of intellectual property in Ukraine in the context of cooperation with the EU and the USA; litigation in the IP field. The discussion was very lively and the event got many positive feedbacks from the participants.
